DEAD DIGNITY

Image by: Man de Man Photography

I sing a lonely song to the moonlight
The only closest company I may ever have tonight
I hum to the echoes of the winds that blow
Composing a symphony only I will ever know,
Or will anybody else hear it?
Give me the chance to obtain my biggest profit
A currency paid in form of a listening ear
If ever I have the capability to renounce this great fear

I am just a girl,
A girl yearning to be free
Mine me out from societal detriments, and simply let me be
The girl that I know I want to see
Will never be so until you let me be

Papa, Oh Papa
If the moon is to turn over to face the day
How I wish I’d have a road map to guide as I run away
Away from the shackles of an undesired earthly eternity
To please a society that makes merry from impunity
My hands and feet you view as currency
You glare at the sight of apples dangling down a tree
Ripe and sweet for your remedy
Punishing me to be lower than a slave
At the expense of my only choice, that God gave

Mama, oh mama
You are a woman like me
Out of his bone and flesh, your unity bore me
But I wonder, oh Mama, while you sip your tea
While you huff and puff your anger like the raging sea
While you watch my walk
While you teach me how to talk
While you effortlessly chatter away with devious maids
Reminiscing on the ransom you freely paid
I wonder,
Would my pain make you shutter, or pierce like a blade?
Or would you suppress your guilt, celebrating societal upgrade?

I’m not grown up Mama, though I have to do so now
Stripped of my valid dreams Papa, I give in to a senseless vow

There’s a flower that blooms from within my soul
A burning flame that seeks to light the world as a whole
The city never sleeps, neither do I
My mind rants like volcanic activity, I hardly shut an eye
Lest I miss a glimpse of hope that could come my way
To awaken my dead dignity, buried everyday

I see that girl, that girl I know I can be
Beautiful, fully grown and ultimately free
Mama, Papa, you too could also see
If only you’d awaken my dead dignity... just let me be
Free! Free!
Awake, alive and free!

This is a piece written to cause awareness and fight against the menace of Early Marriages. Every girl child does have a right to a normal growth pattern. Stripping one of them of their dreams and ambitions by marrying them off early does in no way bring any development in society. Join the fight against early marriages- be a voice for the voiceless, as loud as can be, for there’s someone who needs you in order to be free!

This is actually good. A proper poem. With all the ingredients. Nice to see a cause on there as well. Try wielding your poetic license more. But this is good.

FLOW OR FLOAT?

A lesson I am learning, the older I grow, is that with discovery comes revelation, and revelation does not always soothe. I believe in the slow burn of human connection, not the fleeting flicker of a sprint. I take my time, extending the same patience and grace to others that I give myself in my own process of self-discovery. Sometimes, curiosity bubbles up, a genuine thirst to understand. Other times, my emotional and mental reserves are low, and I'm simply present, observing. But…intrigue me. Nudge the edges of my world with a spark of genuine interest, and you might just pique my curiosity. A "Hmmmm…who is this person?" moment might dawn, and the spotlight of my attention will shift your way. As we forge new connections in life, we are met with a mirror—not always a flattering one—that shows us how much we have changed, and perhaps, how much we still wish to. In that reflection, we see the vastness of who we are and the contradictions we carry. Self-awareness has unlo...

The "WHAT ABOUT ME" ERA

Happy New Year—or maybe a better greeting is, You made it! It’s been an eternity since I last did this, weaving thoughts into sentences. Back then, it was pen and paper; today, it’s keys and screens. The act of writing itself feels like a resurrection. My writing process for the hiatus period has been a messy one of delay, distraction, overthinking, and an impressive dedication to avoidance. Not encouraging terms for the beginning of the year ey? True, but the awareness of it is the start in the right direction if you ask me. 2024 had been a year of relentless demands, stretching me thin in every direction. I constantly felt like I was chasing an elusive "enough," a feeling that left me perpetually unsettled and plagued by the insidious whispers of inadequacy. "I don't know," became my frequent refrain, a mantra of self-doubt that clung to me like a shadow. Yet, as I sat down to evaluate the year, a profound realisation dawned: I had pushed myself beyond my per...

FROM THE COMFORT ZONE TO WHERE LIFE REALLY HAPPENS (OUTSIDE IT)

Image courtesy of www.loc.gov A question was asked to me a couple of weeks ago, phrased in this way…   “What things do you see in your personal life where you might be resisting change?” (Think about this for some time before proceeding to read and hold on to your answer) Frustration tends to build up when things do not go as expected. Change is something each of us responds to differently. There are those who see it as an adventure. Their adrenaline shoots up at the thought of experiencing something or somewhere new. Others like myself take time to embrace it, calculating every single step as we move along. We like to know the details of where we are, what we ought to do, and better still what the future will hold. We dwell mostly in the questioning quarters than boarding the bus headed to “new”.  The word “new” scares us. We’d rather be comfortable with what we know, than be put in a place that expects us to figure things out on our own; and if it takes us ...
